Ned was originally going to be a secret 21st birthday present for Clare. In the process of sourcing photos Melinda decide to involve her in the process.
The chosen reference was Clare’s favourite.
Ned is also 21years old and a real character. He has a lovely liquid eye , always flopped his lower lip and allowed Clare to play with it.
I was very happy with the reference photo as it was sharp and showed some of his character. Clare said she was happy for me to enhance his colour. She also loved his whiskers so I made sure to subtly include them.

LHS – This is the main reference for Ned.
I create a lot of memorial portraits where it’s not possible to get sharper photos. It was great to have Ned available to help with extra photos.
Clare preferred him without a halter so the extra photo bottom RHS helps me to recreate the head structure covered by the halter.
It doesn’t matter that the extra photo isn’t flattering as long as it is sharp.
I used an assortment of other photos to help with details.
