Homeward bound 46 x 60cms Oil on gallery wrap canvas
My portrait ” Homeward Bound ” has just been awarded 1st Prize in the CA Brown Artshow !
Here are the judge’s comments .
I’m a member of a group that regularly paints from a model.. The group have a yearly exhibition where we have to paint a Hunter person of note. This is my 2014 entry.
Brian is a former professor of Newcastle University. Since retirement he has really got into sailing. He has sailed around Australia and just been over to sail around Cape Horn.
I am also a sailor and was very inspired to paint him!
The portrait wasn’t a commission, just one for me, so I told Brian it wouldn’t be the most flattering portrait.s I wanted to capture the old sea dog type of feel- a sailor weary from a long day at sea.
With my commissioned portraits I always create a flattering portrait!
The painting was created from about 7 separate photos – one of his face , another for the pose , a few for his wetgear , several for the setting.
