Jazzabout

50 x 60cms Oil

Here's Jazzabout framed .

'I think it looks great and I am very happy with it.  It is so true to life especially his face.'

Louise

Since this photo was taken he has been hung in position on the wall and looks even better.

My painting's can bring your horse to life much better than any photograph.

Although I work from photos , as an artist I can selectively enhance , play down or remove areas to come up with a painting that really captures them for a  lifetime of treasured memories.

For a gift that no one else can match, a painting of your horse is a unique gift that will touch the hearts of all  involved.

Each painting is a unique and passionate creation and  much  time is taken  to ensure it captures not only a likeness but also the essence of your horse.

If you have ever taken a photo of a few horses you will know that it's  practically impossible to take a group photo of animals and have every one looking it's best. This is even harder when riders are in the equation! If you have a photo that you like but the horses head position isn't quite right , you would like more activity or your own expression leaves a lot to be desired by using other reference photos I can overcome these problems and come up with your ideal painting.

Things to keep in mind when supplying reference photos

Best results are obtained by using sharp in focus photos photos with your horse in the sun so there is gloss on their coat. A close -up of the head from the same angle is good. Professional photos are great but you will need to contact the photographer and check that it is Ok for me to use their photo's as reference.( This shouldn't be a problem). Additional photos will help me to get a better idea of your horse. If you are local I can come and take suitable photos.

As I said earlier , you may have a professional photo you love but your horses mouth is open, ears back , your position isn't as good as you'd like etc. With suitable photos I can fix this to come up with your ' perfect ' painting.

Size suggestions-

Your budget will obviously be a factor in deciding size as the larger and more complicated paintings are more expensive due to the extra skill and time it takes me to paint them. I have done smaller versions of these in the past but I feel that to do justice to your horse the larger sizes are required.

Special Pastel sketch - $350 framed - suitable for head portraits. Frame under glass with 2 mats  in this colour and style . Inner border mat colour can vary.

Head only pose- 30 x 40cms .I can do a smaller size if required but it  wont' have as much impact. A head portrait  is great for showing your horses character as I can put expression and detail into the eyes.

Horse and rider - 40 x 50cms front on or compact poses .

                            50 x 60cm  /60 x 70cms or larger for side on / action poses

Larger sizes are great to show the grace and power of your horse or his athletiscm-his overall beauty.

With a 50 x60cm side on horse portrait your horses head will be approx 4- 5cms long. If you were looking at him at that distance you wouldn't be able to see the colour or details in his eyes. I can't put any real detail into his eyes as it  looks unnatural and people looking at the painting would feel something was wrong. Similarly a riders face will be only a few cms long so the features will be suggested rather than detailed.

For a more detailed painting of your horses head and riders face a front on pose where you are standing next to the horse is the best or something like a cropped closeup of just you and the horses shoulders if you are jumping.

See suggested size examples below-All are starting sizes. The bigger the better if you want impact , especially with a rider.

30x 40cms - Suits a head only pose

40 x 50cms -best for a front on / compact pose

50 x 60cm  + side on

( I suggest a larger  size with a  rider)

40 x 50cm suits a portrait type pose

30 x 40 suiting a portrait type pose

'It's gorgeous!!"

Cheryl

Although it looks simple here this was a large complicated portrait. I used about 12 different reference photos to create it. As it is going to be in a large room it is designed to be viewed from about 10- 15' away. See below.

'Alex is a jockey and sadly lost her favourite horse Country Tide. She contacted me wanting a portrait to help ease the pain of losing him. She had a lovely photo of the two of them but it was taken inside a stable via a mobile phone and wasn't really sharp or clear enough for me to create a good portrait from.

She had other clearer photos of Country but she really loved this photo which shows the connection the two of them had.

I knew it would be difficult but I could see how much it meant to her and suggested that if she could find a similar horse I could come and take some extra photos .With those to help I was able to create their portrait although it certainly wasn't an easy task!

Below are the original photo and the finished portrait.

The original reference photo -

From looking at other photos of Country I could see that this photo didn't really do him justice. He looks really dark and drab here. You can't see his eye, or any of the structure of his head and Alex's face is all overexposed.

( John Boy is now 32 and looking a bit worse for wear. We created a portrait of him in his prime as a surprise birthday gift for Karen's husband Jeff )

' ' Wow he is absolutely spectacular ! I knew once I saw the portrait in the flesh I would love him.
I couldn't stop admiring him but had to package him back up and wait!

I have been patiently waiting 65 days since he arrived to be able to give to and see Jeff's reaction.

 Karen

The day-

' I was so excited about giving the portrait to Jeff. Finally the moment had arrived and the unveiling was taking place. He was actually speechless when he saw it. It seemed like he didn't say anything for an eternity. His expression was one of full emotion, it moved him that much. He didn't need to say anything his face said it all. He was , is , so delighted with it.

Once again thankyou Sue.

With our heartfelt thanks ,

 Karen & Jeff

"I received the picture this morning in the mail and it is AMAZING!  I can't wait to give it to Simon, fortunately this year is flying past so a month shouldn't take too long.  I did have to give it to one of the girls here to look after at her house though so I didn't give in to temptation!  The way you captured their personalities is incredible, I almost want to pat Peppy's outstretched muzzle. Thanks again, the portrait is fantastic.  I'll let you know Simon's reaction next month! "

 Kelva

'When Simon saw the portrait he was quite speechless, and  anyone who knows Simon will know that this is no mean feat!.  He couldn't believe the likeness and how you captured their characters perfectly.  It is quite incredible considering the lack of quality photos that you had to work with!  Thank you so much for doing such a wonderful job of bringing our mares back to "life", we feel like they're still with us in a way.'

Kelva

( Both mares had died of separate accidents within 3 weeks of each other. We only had mobile phone photos for reference and they weren't very good so I'm glad the portrait turned out as well as it did!- Sue)

"This is my entry for the 2011 Inglis Equine Art Prize for Thoroughbred racehorses. I had to go to a TB stud and take reference photos and do a painting with the theme 'Life at Stud'. 'Thongy' is a 9 month old weanling and was being prepared for the sales. He was everyones favourite and they were going to miss him. He ended up being a favourite at the sales and selling for top price. He has now gone to New Zealand."

This horse is very dear to me and has given me a lot of enjoyment in both training and competitions .Now everytime I walk past this lovely painting I enjoy seeing him forever portrayed in Oils."

This is one I did for myself. I've been trying to get a decent photo of us for years without luck so I decided to make my 'ideal' painting! I picked a happy photo of us both from a few years back. Zeuss's pose wasn't very good nor mine but I fixed that in the portrait and also slimmed myself down..LOL's..

Because I was pleasing myself I also zapped up the colour a lot as I love colour!

As always the images are of reduced quality for the web. The original painting is much sharper than this.

As this wasn't a commission I decided my aim would be to emphasise the movement and front of the horse and everything else would be less important. If this was a commission the client would have had input and I could have put a jacket on the rider , had the horse plaited maybe even had the rider the most important. That's the beauty of a painting, unlike a photo where it is already chosen for you and everything is important , in a painting you can choose to emphasise whatever you want .So from one photo you can get several paintings all with a different feel.

     " It's awesome! I'm sure he'll love it!.."

        Kym

This painting was a compromise. It was to be a secret and the reference photos weren't good enough to use so we had to use a different horse and rider, change the colour of the horse and add a suitable face from our photos of Grant to suit the riders pose.

" Louise loved her painting. I joked and said I expected downlights installed above the painting as Lou's husband was an electrician in a former life - so he did and they are on a timer so that they are on from when they arrive home until they leave for work the next morn. Even if you get up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet you can view the painting. A huge success just not sure how to top it next year."

"Thank you so much for showing us around your place when we were in Australia but the best thing was to see the painting of Piquett - how on earth do you do it? The expression in her eyes is just perfect - and all the undertones in the dark colour - well everything..  And Gitte was thrilled when she saw it! You have really done a wonderful job.

Anne maria

"I was very happy to receive the beautiful painting of Piquett. I'm amazed how many details you have been able to get into the picture - she looks so alive! It's now on the wall in our living room and many people comment it. I cannot praise it enough, it's the best gift I've ever received!
I've attached some photos from the day I got it, and after having it framed so you can see what it looks like. I hope you like it - I'm very happy with the result! "
